What is lightning protection and how does it work?
There are different types of lightning protection available on the market today. The most common and most proven type is known as conventional lightning protection or Franklin rod system (After the inventor, Benjamin Franklin). This particular system is the only system that Lowcountry Lightning Protection llc. designs, recommends, and installs. The Franklin system utilizes passive components and common bonding to ensure lightning strikes the system and passes safely to ground without affecting the structure it is protecting. Conventional lightning protection is the only lightning protection system that has recognized standards by the National Fire Protection Association and Underwriters Laboratories. When installed to these standards, conventional lightning protection can protect any building from structural damage due to a lightning strike.
Every properly installed conventional lightning protection system is designed specifically for the structure it is protecting. The design incorporates five key components that work together to keep the building safe from lightning strikes: strike termination devices, conductors, grounding, common bonding, and surge protection.
